In the opening game of the Greenlight Sunshine Slam, the University at Albany men's basketball team lost to Austin Peay, 74-59. A 13-0 scoring run by the Governors in the final minutes helped them pull away from a game that featured 14 lead changes.
Austin Peay jumped to a 9-5 lead by the first media timeout. Gerald Drumgoole Jr. and Aaron Reddish led UAlbany with two points each, but four early turnovers plagued the team.
UAlbany tied the score after the first media timeout, 13-13. Reddish, Tairi Ketner, and Sarju Patel all had three points each.
UAlbany led 32-30 at halftime after Da'Kquan Davis hit a three-pointer within the final minute. The Great Danes shot 40% from the field and 36.4% from three in the first half. Austin Peay shot 48% from the field and just 16.7% from three.
By the first media TO of the second half, the score read 36-35 in favor of the Great Danes. All four points for UAlbany came from Drumgoole Jr.
Austin Peay held a 57-55 advantage with 4:36 left in the game. A technical foul was called on Guy Fauntleroy for the Governors, sending Davis to the line for UAlbany, tying the game.
By the two-minute warning, the Governors were up 69-57, a deficit the Great Danes couldn't overcome. The Danes struggled from deep in the second half. UAlbany shot 43.5% from the field and made just 1-11 from three in the final 20 minutes. Austin Peay shot 50% from the field and 28.6% from three.
