“Our guys played hard. They fought back to make it a one goal game,” UAlbany head coach Trevor Gorman said. “Ultimately we are conceding too many goals that come from simple moments. We need to overcome that and put ourselves in [a] better position to win matches."
The first couple of minutes were physical, with strong tackles coming from both teams. Vermont started to put pressure on UAlbany with the Great Dane defense clearing the ball off the line to prevent a goal. Four minutes later, Vermont’s David Ismail curled the ball from just outside of the box into the bottom right corner making it 1-0 to Vermont. Just before halftime, Vermont’s Maximilian Kissel shot the ball from close range against the crossbar and tapped in the rebound, doubling the lead.
UAlbany started the second half controlling offensive possession and putting pressure on Vermont’s defense. In the 69th minute UAlbany’s Ander Castillo scored a header from a corner kick with the help of teammate Timo Jansen to make it 2-1. Vermont’s Yaniv Bazini scored from close range a minute later. Vermont continued their pressure with Kissel scoring again from close range to make it 4-1.
In Saturday’s loss, Vermont outshot UAlbany 15-8. Ander Castillo scored his fifth goal of the season adding to his tally as the Great Danes’ top scorer.
UAlbany will visit UMBC in Baltimore, Maryland, on Saturday, Oct. 12.
