On Sunday, the UAlbany Women’s Soccer team defeated the No. 5 seed Binghamton 2-0 to advance to the American East Semifinals. Two second half goals from Jada Colbert and Brooke Pickett were the difference for the Great Danes, as they won their fifth game in the month of October after winning just one in all games prior.
Colbert’s goal was her third of the season and came on a breakaway in the 61st minute for the first goal of the game. Pickett, in her first career start, earned her first career goal in the 75th minute scoring off of a turnover by Binghamton’s defense.
“Jada's goal to put us ahead was an incredible individual effort and something she has deserved all season long,” said the Great Danes head coach. “Likewise, Brooke scoring her first career goal in the playoffs to give us a bit of security is something that she's earned and we couldn't be happier for her. We couldn't be prouder of how the team responded to the adversity we have faced this past week and we are excited to hit the road once again come Thursday."
UAlbany goalkeeper Cassandra Coster recorded three saves in the game shutting out Binghamton for the second time in a row. UAlbany outshot Binghamton by a narrow margin of 13-11 in the game, but the defense stood pact holding their 2-0 lead to secure the win.
Howard spoke on her team’s gutsy playoff performance. "It's hard to put into words how big this win was for us,” said Howard. “To beat a very strong Binghamton team twice in a matter of four days shows a lot about this group and how hard they're willing to fight.”
The Great Danes will now take on the No. 1 seed Vermont in the American East semifinals on Nov. 4. They look to continue their improbable Cinderella run and advance to the American East Championship Game.
