Women’s Soccer Bested by UMass Lowell

The University at Albany women’s soccer team lost in a close match against UMass Lowell on Sunday by a score of 2-1. The River Hawks outshot the Great Danes 17-10, and both teams combined for 30 fouls and six yellow cards throughout the game.


Selma Elverum scored the lone goal for the Great Danes on Sunday.

UAlbany and UMass went back and forth all game. The scoring was started by UMass forward Calliste Brookshire off of an assist by midfielder Hope Santaniello in the 39th minute. UAlbany answered in the 54th minute when sophomore forward Selma Elverum scored off of a slow roller deep into the River Hawks’ box from senior midfielder Olivia Piraino.


However, UMass would retake the lead less than 10 minutes later when Santaniello got the ball past UAlbany goalkeeper Gabriella Terranova, who recorded five saves throughout the game. The goal was assisted by Chloe Layne.


UMass held UAlbany to zero shots in the last 23 minutes of the game, and held on to their 2-1 lead to grab the win over the Great Danes.


The Great Danes now stand at 1-4-2 in conference and 4-9-2 overall heading into their final game of the year at home against Vermont on Oct. 26.
