The University at Albany becomes home to students for an entire school year. Students are placed in a variety of different shaped and sized dorm rooms. While dorms can seem a little small or uncomfortable, there are so many ways that you can make your dorm room feel like home!
One way that you can add to your dorm room is through pictures. Having pictures of friends and family can personalize your room. Some fun ways to do this are to make a photo collage on your wall, or to add some photo frames to your desk.
Your bed is going to be the focal point of your dorm. Throw pillows and blankets not only can make your bed comfier, but they also make your room feel cozier. These can be a cheap option too, fuzzy blankets and fluffy pillows can be found at stores like Walmart and Target.
While you cannot have LED strip lights in a dorm room, you can have things like fairy lights and vines to decorate your walls. Fairy lights are a great way to customize your room because they minimize the harsh light. Having vines or other fake flower decorations add to the vibes of your dorm room as well. The best place to get these is either Amazon or Target.
Posters are another great way to add to your room. According to the UAlbany Housing License, you can only cover 10% of your wall with posters, but there is still space to add a poster from your favorite artist, or a poster from your favorite movie. You can buy small poster cards on Amazon so you can have more than one on your walls. If you get the small poster cards you can also make a collage of posters on your wall, which can result in being cuter than just a singular poster.
Although not a decoration, a projector can be an inventive and fun way to watch TV or movies in your room. Sometimes watching TV on your laptop does not do the show or movie justice. A projector is also a cool way to have movie nights with friends!
No matter how you choose to decorate your dorm, just make sure it represents you. This is where you are going to be living for the next year, it’ll be a second home. Add to it whatever makes it feel like home.
