Second Half Surge Not Enough as Great Danes Football Remains Winless

Brandon Vanenburg

The University at Albany football team out-scored the Towson Tigers 24-14 and out-gained them 287-141 in the second half, but a 24-point first-half deficit proved to be insurmountable as the team fell 38-24 on the road to remain winless on the year.

The Great Dane’s offense struggled to get anything going in the first half and their strong second half was not enough to come back. Jeff Undercuffer was 28-41 for 341 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception that was returned for a touchdown. Wide receivers Roy Alexander and Jackson Parker finished with a combined 208 yards on 21 receptions and 2 touchdowns. Running back Karl Mofor finished with 89 yards on 19 rushes and a score.

The defense, which has kept a lot of games close for the Great Danes, had one of their worst games of the season. They allowed 259 yards on the ground, their worst performance this season. Their inability to get rushing stops led to 11 first downs on the day and was a major reason UAlbany faced a 24-0 deficit at halftime.

Turnovers plagued the Great Danes all day. The Great Danes drove the ball to the one-yard line on their first offensive possession before fumbling the ball away on the goal line. The Tigers broke the game open when Townson cornerback Mark Collins intercepted a pass from Undercuffler, returning the ball 80 yards to the house for a pick-six. The Great Danes’ turnover problems were not solved at the halftime break, and the opening drive of the second half was cut short in Towson territory due to another fumble.

Head Coach Greg Gattuso talked about their missed opportunities. "We put ourselves in a hole and tried to dig out of it in the second half,” said Gattuso. “If we were able to go down and put one more in we felt like we had a chance to win the football game. There was plenty of time left in the fourth quarter. We just couldn't rise up."

The Great Danes return home to host CAA rival New Hampshire next Saturday for Staff Appreciation Day as they still look for their first win.
