The University at Albany women’s soccer team continued their road trip with a game against Boston University on Sunday in which they lost 3-2 against the Terriers. Boston University outshot UAlbany 12-9 in the loss, which is the third straight for the Great Danes, leaving them with a 1-3 record.

This was the first time these two teams had met since BU left the America East Conference for the Patriot League following the 2012-13 season.

Scoring began in the 11th minute of the game when Boston University’s Natalie Godoy netted a goal off an assist by Giulianna Gianino. In the 25th minute, UAlbany’s Brooke Pickett took a shot on goal, but Boston goalkeeper Celia Braun made the save. By halftime, the Terriers had taken seven shots to the Great Danes’ three.

Sophomore forward Hailey Hnis converted a penalty kick for UAlbany in the 58th minute, scoring the first goal of her career and tying the game at 1-1. Soon after, in the 62nd minute, UAlbany’s Iola Cotter connected her head to a pass in the air and redirected it towards BU’s goal. Braun initially gathered the ball into her hands, however she bobbled the catch, allowing the ball to roll just over the goal line, giving UAlbany a 2-1 lead.

Boston University was not ready to give up just yet. In the final 10 minutes of the game, and one minute apart, the Terriers scored twice to retake the lead. The first of the two came in the 82nd minute, after Boston’s Lily Matthews slipped a shot through the UAlbany defense off an assist by Morgan Fagan. The second goal came only a minute later when a Boston corner kick was redirected into UAlbany’s goal off the head of Mackenzie Stickelman, giving BU a 3-2 lead.

Cotter nearly tied the game in the 85th minute with a shot that hit off Boston’s crossbar. Tiffany Bernot made a final effort for Albany with a shot on goal in the 89th minute, but it was saved by Braun. Boston University held on for the 3-2 win against the Great Danes.

UAlbany continues their road trip with a match at Rider University on Thursday, August 31.
